Number and Quantity
The Real Number System
This unit explores the various classifications of the real number system, including the counting numbers, the whole numbers, the integers, the rational numbers and the irrational numbers. Students will need to develop a working knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and negative numbers. Many of the aforementioned skills are not explicitly assessed on the TASC, however, they form a foundation on which subsequent skills are built. For example, working with negative numbers is critical to success in algebra. In addition to primary number sense, this unit will address squares and square roots, as well as simplifying simple radicals (square roots). TASC questions related to this unit often take the form of simple word problems, including time problems.
